3 Albums - 6 Artists.Bob MarleyLee PerryDennis BrownGregory IsaacsJohn HoltDave & Ansell CollinsTo many, Reggae and Jamaica are one and the same. Originating in the late 1960s, reggae evolved from ska and rocksteady music. Ska - also known as blue beat - emerged in the late 1950s and combined mento and calypso with American rhythm and blues and jazz. Rocksteady followed, emerging in the mid sixties and performed by Jamaican vocal harmony groups like the Paragons. There is some disagreement as to the origins of the name 'reggae'. However the accepted first use in song is in the 1968 album, Do The Reggay by Toots and the Maytals. These were the foundations of reggae music. Characterized by a heavy bass guitar sound, reggae music is instantly recognizable in the way that it accents the second and fourth beats in each bar. The characteristic percussive reggae 'heartbeat' draws on the tradition of African nyabingi drumming. Drumbeats vary across the genre and there are three main types. Some songs carry a 'One Drop' beat, with emphasis on the third beat of the bar while the first beat remains 'empty'. A second drumbeat type is termed 'Rockers' which has emphasis on beats one and three in the bar. The third style is 'Steppers' and is a more driving beat with a bass drum playing four beats to the bar. The genre itself is also comprised of two specific subgenres. Roots reggae music is Rastafarian inspired reggae, its lyrics praise Jah, are highly spiritual and rooted in a social awareness that should be termed 'political'. Dancehall reggae uses rapping or 'toasting' over faster beats and is largely secular in subject matter focusing on aspects of everyday life like sex, socializing, and lifestyle. Dancehall has spawned further subgenres, including Ragga, Reggaeton, and Reggae Rock fusion.

3 Albums - 6 Artists.Elvis PresleyCliff RichardRoy OrbisonBuddy HollyThe Everly BrothersConnie FrancisIn the era of drive-ins, bobby sox and soda bars, popular music in America exploded. This is the golden age of pop in which the music industry contributed significantly to the development of a new market: The teenager. Standing in stark contrast to the crooners, swingers and big band sounds much loved by their parents, teenagers now had their own culture, language and idols. Theirs was a very different world to the one their parents knew when they were young. World War II was over, The Great Depression long gone, and free TV had come to America and because of this, pop stars had to be visually appealing in how they looked and how they performed. Artists aimed at the female teen market like Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard were subjects of widespread moral panics because of their perceived corrupting influence on young people - especially young women. But it wasn't all about male teen idols, the fifties pop scene was a hungry beast and it needed to be fed continuously with new artists and new sounds. Professionally produced and packaged, the pop song came into its own in this decade as a new, affluent teenage market emerged. Teens wanted a constant diet of new sounds. Luckily the industry was geared up to feed them. Hit factories were certainly nothing new, but those housed in the Brill Building in New York did it the best. The Brill Building contained over 150 music businesses - by 1962 it peaked at 165 - making it a one-stop-shop for wannabe pop stars. Connie Francis started out there as a demo singer, Elvis Presley was based there, as were his key songwriting team, Leiber and Stoller.

3 Albums - 6 Artists.James BrownJackie WIlsonBen E KingJimmy RuffinThe DriftersThe Three DegreesSoul music was born in the late 1950s and was a fusion of rhythm and blues, blues, rock and roll, and gospel music. Indeed, its emergence is often defined as the 'secularization of gospel'. Like gospel music, Soul is characterized by two types of song - up tempo numbers sung collectively and made to move to, and slower, quieter songs of yearning and reflection. Many soul artists originated from the Southern states of America and cut their musical teeth in gospel groups. Controversially, these artists took gospel songs and changed the lyrics to more secular themes like love and personal struggle. The pioneers of soul include James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and Sam Cooke - all featured in this collection. The origin of the term 'soul' has been hotly debated since its inception. In the 1950s, jazz musicians describing the essence that had been taken out of the genre after years of commercialization used the word. In the sixties, 'soul' and 'essence' became a powerful signifier of African-American identity in the Civil Rights Movement. In terms of racial integration in America, soul played a pivotal role. It gave black artists the opportunity to reach out to white audiences opening up a world of African American music to them. African American songwriter, Berry Gordy set up Tamla Motown as a hit factory aiming at white suburban American teens. The development of soul as a genre also allowed for some truly racially integrated working practices and relationships. For example, one of the greatest soul labels, Stax Records in Memphis had seen black and white people working together from its very beginnings, as Stax historian, Rob Bowman explains: “…virtually from the beginning, Stax Records was racially integrated in the studio, in the front office, and by the midway point in its history, at ownership level. All this took place in Memphis, Tennessee, a city that as late as 1971 elected to close its public swimming pools rather than allow black and white kids to swim side by side in the scorching heat.”

3 Albums - 6 Artists.Johnny CashDolly PartonKenny RogersHank WilliamsPatsy ClineGeorge JonesCountry music originated in the Southern states of America in the 1920s. It was the music of white, working class, often rural Americans and as such took its influences from folk, western music, and the folk music styles of the country's many immigrants, most notably Irish and Celtic settlers. Until the 1950s, country music was a genre in search of a much better title. In the 1930s what we would recognise as country music today was often termed 'hillbilly music' but by the end of that decade the term was considered derogatory. As America entered the fifties it seemed that the term 'folk' would be adopted but Pete Seeger, then lead signer with the band the Weavers and a self-confessed folk singer was called to Senator Joe McCarthy's Senate Hearings in 1952 to account for his apparent communist sympathies record companies couldn't disassociate themselves from the label fast enough, adopting the term 'country'. Since that time, country music has grown and developed as all genres must do if they are to survive and there are numerous sub genres including Honky Tonk Country, Countrypolitan, Outlaw Country, and Country Pop. Popular in the 1950s, Honky Tonk is a gritty, upbeat sound with a crisp backbeat and a full rhythm section playing a two-beat rhythm. It usually features guitar, fiddle, string bass and steel guitar. This style can be heard in the music of Hank Williams. In the 1960s, country music took on a lusher, more sumptuous feel influenced by the hugely successful Nashville Sound. Seeking to widen the audience for country music, the smooth sounds of Countrypolitan feature string arrangements, orchestras and choirs delivering backing vocals. Examples of this rich, sophisticated sound can be heard in in the work of Patsy Cline and George Jones. Tired of the strictures placed on them by increasingly powerful and controlling record labels, by the 1970s a group of country musicians rebelled and Outlaw Country was born. As the seventies dawned, musicians spearheaded by the likes of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sought to take back control of their music, their songs, and whom they hired to record with them. This gave rise to music that was more experimental and that blended rock and folk rhythms with country music instrumentation. Lyrics are introspective and/or socially aware in content. Johnny Cash took the Outlaw route with huge success. By the 1980s, the Outlaw movement gave way to the crossover subgenre of Country Pop. This can be seen as a continuation of the Countrypolitan project to widen the appeal of country music in order to attract new audiences. Country Pop songs are structurally more like standard pop songs with a country flavor. Artists producing music in this category include Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. This collection is the ideal starting place to discover your kind of country music.

3 Albums - 6 Artists.Nat King ColePerry ComoDoris DayRosemary ClooneyThe PlattersFats DominoFifties America was a golden age characterized by the rock and roll revolution, the coming of the television age and a new postwar affluence. The music industry expanded rapidly at this time, new independent record labels sprang up countrywide intent on delivering the sounds of the new era to the pop-hungry teen masses. Before 1953, many products were either unavailable or were difficult or expensive to acquire. However, as the American economy recovered from World War II, there was a surge of pent up consumer demand for items once considered luxuries. Coupled with the post war baby boom between 1945 and 1964, it is easy to see how America, as the world's default example of consumer culture, began to flourish. All these new products needed to find all these new consumers and the advertising industry helped to connect them. Advertising experienced a golden age in the fifties, with ad spend increasing at staggering rates throughout the decade. In 1950, the gross annual ad spend amounted to $1.3 billion in the US. By 1960, annual gross ad spend had increased to $6 billion. The increase can in large part be attributed to the rise of television as the number one platform for selling products and popular music became an increasingly important product with which to target the newly constructed teenage market. Television, with its mass appeal, mass audience and mass market needed stars to promote products - either through direct advertising, or appearing on their own advertiser sponsored TV show. The increasing power of television throughout the decade saw stars such as Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como get their own variety shows providing a new platform for artists to showcase their music and for labels to get their offerings out in front of the kids. Como was the 'King of TV' in this regard. An early adopter of the medium, he started out in 1948 with a televised version of his radio show, the Chesterfield Supper Club. He had his own TV shows right up until 1994 and his Christmas Specials became a festive family-viewing highlight year after year. It was a tough time, though for the Hollywood studios. Television was a major threat, box office receipts were down and they were reeling from the Paramount Decree of 1948 forcing them to dispose of their movie theatres. Artists like Doris Day who starred in 39 films over a twenty year period, tempted audiences back to movie theatres and were pivotal in keeping up production levels at such a precarious time for the industry. This collection demonstrates that tectonic cultural shifts take time for their effects to be realized, remnants of the old styles live alongside those of the new and the fifties were certainly no exception. Crooners like Nat King Cole and Perry Como co-existed in the Billboard Top 40 with the new rock and rollers like Fats Domino and the emerging Doo Wop style of The Platters. At one vibrant, smooth, raucous and challenging, with one foot in the past but staring straight ahead, the music scene in the fifties showed the first signs of long-tail marketing with so many niches and so much product. Enjoy this unique flavor of the Fifties.

3 Albums - 6 Artists.Aretha FranklinElla FitzgeraldPeggy LeeShirley BasseyEtta JamesJudy GarlandDivas! Literally translated as 'deity' or 'goddess', every female artist in this collection has earned this most prized of epithets. Spanning over 80 years, these women have become legendary for their talent, their attitudes, and their presence. In a culture that prizes youth and beauty over depth and experience, the fact that these divas rose to the top is testament to their musical prowess. In an industry that feeds on the next big thing, their longevity and enduring popularity speaks of their passion for the songs and their audiences' unstinting adoration of them. Since the early 19th century, entertainment was one of the few professions that was open to women - provided they did not mind being labeled as disreputable for doing so the moment they 'played for pay'. Many aspiring female singers and musicians had to satisfy their musical aspirations by playing at home for close friends and family. However, all this changed in the 1920s with two developments in the industry. There was increasing popularity of the blues and blues women like Bessie Smith made fortunes from sharing their talent. In addition, there was the advent of recording, which enabled women to step in front of the microphone - if not out onto the public stage initially - and to find a market for their music. All the formidable female vocalists featured in this collection found their audiences in a variety of ways and this provides an historical snapshot of the female vocalists' routes to stardom. It should be noted though that all had their career foundations in entertaining audiences of one kind or another. The most well trodden route to solo stardom in the 1940s was via the big band, and this is also true of male vocalists too. Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee both joined big bands in their early careers before emerging as solo stars. Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey made the transition from backgrounds in entertainment, while Aretha Franklin and Etta James were both involved in groups. Franklin cut her teeth in her minister father's gospel choir, while Etta James also sang in a church choir before forming her own girl group, Etta James and the Creolettes. Each artist featured in this collection is a unique talent but making it to Diva status isn't just about the voice. They have an undeniable X factor. Fitzgerald was a hard-working pioneer, often touring and performing for fifty weeks a year. Franklin has the big voice that projected the intimate thoughts and feelings of women the world over. Lee had business savvy, knew the value of promotion and excelled as a songwriter. Bassey put Wales on the musical map almost singlehandedly. James poured out her art and her soul in her music, unafraid of the woman she was and not caring what others made of her. Garland similarly projected her inner self and personal struggles in her musical performances; a quality that commentators have suggested is the key ingredient in her status as gay icon. A diva needs determination, courage, passion, talent, and intelligence, not just the voice and the attitude. As Aretha Franklin said: “Being the Queen is not all about singing, and being a diva isn't all about singing. It has much to do with your service to people.” Viva La Diva!
